In Stanley G. Weinbaum's *A Martian Odyssey*, chemist Dick Jarvis recounts his harrowing solo trek across the Martian surface after his auxiliary rocket fails. Stranded eighty-five Earth-weights away from the *Ares* crew, Jarvis navigates deserts and canals, encountering strange flora and fauna. His journey takes a profound turn when he rescues Tweel, an ostrich-like creature with a flexible beak and four-toed hands. Despite a non-human language, Jarvis and Tweel form a deep bond, communicating through gestures and shared experiences. Together, they witness the emergence of a terrifying yet fascinating 'dream-beast.' This silicon-based entity constructs massive pyramids from silica bricks, representing a form of life distinct from carbon-based biology. The creature is blind, deaf, and nerveless, yet immortal, continuing its construction cycle for half a million years or more until its food source is exhausted. The pair eventually reaches a subterranean city inhabited by barrel-shaped creatures with eyes all around their bodies. These beings communicate via drumming on a diaphragm and possess a mysterious healing crystal that instantly cures Jarvis's frostbite and warts. However, the city's inhabitants display a bizarre indifference to life, casually shoving themselves under a grinding wheel to be crushed, treating death as a mundane routine. When the creatures eventually attack, Jarvis and Tweel fight back using improvised weapons. Just as Jarvis faces certain defeat, engineer Putz arrives in a rescue rocket. Jarvis escapes, but Tweel flies off into the darkness to stay with his dying friend, leaving Jarvis to mourn his lost companion. The story concludes with the crew marveling at the strange discoveries, including the potential for the healing crystal to cure cancer, while Jarvis laments the loss of his Martian friend.
