Description max 80 words
Set on a brutal frontier where civilization clashes with the wilderness, this classic Conan adventure follows the Cimmerian hero as he hunts Pictish raiders and uncovers a dark sorcerer's plot involving a giant serpent and ancient beasts. A gripping tale of sword and sorcery.
Summary up to 500 words
In the treacherous forests beyond Thunder River, Conan the Cimmerian travels alone, acutely aware of the lurking dangers of the wild. His solitude is interrupted by Balthus, a frontiersman recently joined the garrison at Fort Tuscelan. Together, they track a Pictish scout and discover the mutilated body of a murdered merchant, realizing they face not simple raiders but a sorcerer named Zogar Sag. Zogar, a wizard from Gwawela, has stolen a pack-train and is terrorizing the region with a giant python. Conan and Balthus infiltrate Zogar's hut, where they find the merchant's head on an altar and the python coiled around an idol. During their escape, the python attacks, but Conan kills it with a spear. They also dispatch a leopard trained by Zogar, revealing that the sorcerer commands only beasts that remember the ancient god Jhebbal Sag. Soon after, a green witch-fire appears, and a demon-like entity speaks to Conan, claiming kinship with Zogar and declaring him doomed by the gods of darkness. The entity attacks, and Conan engages in a fierce battle, eventually slaying the fire-being. Meanwhile, the Pictish horde, led by Zogar, lays siege to the fort. A survivor reports that Zogar died suddenly during the battle, seemingly by magic, causing the Picts to lose their nerve and retreat. Conan reflects on the nature of barbarism versus civilization, acknowledging that barbarism is the natural state of mankind. The story concludes with the frontier pushed back to the Black River, and Conan toasting the memory of his fallen companions, including Balthus and the loyal dog who fought alongside him.
