Set in medieval Scotland, William Shakespeare's *Macbeth* opens with three witches prophesying that Macbeth will become King. After Macbeth heroically defeats the rebel Macdonwald and the Norwegian King Sweno, King Duncan rewards him with the title of Thane of Cawdor. The witches' second prophecy—that Macbeth will be king—ignites a chain of events that destroys his life. Consumed by ambition and spurred by his wife, Lady Macbeth, Macbeth murders King Duncan in his sleep. Haunted by guilt and the ghost of Banquo, whom he fears will usurp his throne, Macbeth orders the murder of Banquo and his son, Fleance. While Banquo dies, Fleance escapes. As Macbeth's reign descends into terror, nobles flee and Lady Macbeth succumbs to madness, sleepwalking and attempting to wash away imaginary bloodstains before taking her own life. An army led by Malcolm, Duncan's son, marches toward Macbeth's castle at Dunsinane. The witches' final prophecy suggests Macbeth is invincible until Birnam Wood moves to Dunsinane and a man not born of woman kills him. Macbeth interprets these signs as impossible, believing the forest cannot walk and that all men are born of women. In the final act, the English and Scottish forces camouflage their advance by carrying tree branches, making the army appear to move like a forest. Macbeth's confidence crumbles as he realizes the prophecies are being fulfilled. He is slain by Macduff, who reveals he was 'from his mother's womb untimely ripped,' bypassing the literal condition of the prophecy. The play concludes with Malcolm being crowned King, restoring order to Scotland and ending the reign of tyranny.
