In one of the world's finest nurseries, three children—John Napoleon, Wendy Moira Angela, and Michael—are cared for by their dog, Nana. One evening, Peter Pan enters through an open window after losing his shadow to a frightened nurse. Wendy sews his shadow back on with thread, and he reveals his refusal to grow up. He introduces Wendy to Tinker Bell, the fairy who tinkles like a bell, before taking them to Never-Never Land. There, they meet the Lost Boys, children abandoned by nurses or left behind in prams. They establish a home in an underground cave protected by Tiger Lily and her Red Indians from Captain Hook's pirates. Hook, whose arm was severed by Peter years ago, relentlessly pursues Peter with a crocodile that chases him whenever it hears the ticking of a clock swallowed by the beast. The group visits the Mermaids' Lagoon to rescue Tiger Lily, who has been captured. A fierce battle ensues on water and in the air. Later, Hook attempts to poison Peter's medicine but is thwarted when Tinker Bell drinks the poison herself to save her friend. Her fading light is restored only when children worldwide clap their hands in belief of fairies. Finally, the children are captured by pirates and forced onto the ship. Hook intends to walk them off the plank, but Peter returns, disguised as a woman to trick Hook into throwing him overboard. In the ensuing chaos, Peter defeats Hook, pushing him into the sea where he is eaten by the crocodile. The remaining pirates drown or are captured. Back home, Mr. Darling lives in his dog's kennel as penance for dismissing Nana. When the children return, Mrs. Darling adopts the Lost Boys and Peter. However, Peter cannot stay; he flies back to Never-Never Land. Wendy visits him once a year for spring cleaning. The story ends with Peter sitting outside Wendy's new home in the tree tops, calling to the spring.
