In *The Sun Virgin*, Jr. Thomas Dixon chronicles the rise and catastrophic fall of the Inca Empire through the eyes of Francisco Pizarro, a rugged Spanish conquistador. Returning from a perilous expedition to Panama with gold, llamas, and tales of Inca splendor, Pizarro faces hostility from Governor Rios, who fears his ambition. Undeterred, Pizarro, along with the fiery Almagro and the pious Father Luque, decides to bypass the governor and seek a royal charter directly from Emperor Charles V. Their journey is fraught with danger; upon arrival in Spain, Pizarro is falsely arrested by a rival lawyer but is quickly released by the Emperor. Upon returning to the New World, Pizarro finds the Inca empire in turmoil following the death of the previous ruler. He discovers that the Inca's daughter, Yma, known as the Sun Virgin, is being considered to marry Toparca to unite the fractured tribes. Seizing this opportunity to consolidate his power, Pizarro orchestrates a daring ambush at Caxamalca, trapping the Inca and his small guard while his vast army watches from the hills. The Inca is captured alive, effectively paralyzing the empire. With the Inca subdued, Pizarro crowns Toparca as the new Emperor and installs Yma as his Queen, though Yma's heart belongs to the Spanish cavalier Molina. The narrative then shifts to the inevitable decline of the civilization. Over the next twenty years, Spanish greed destroys the land, killing the llamas, breaking aqueducts, and leaving fields barren. Civil wars follow, with Hernando Pizarro eventually betraying and executing his brother Almagro. The story concludes with the death of the aging Francisco Pizarro in his own home in Lima, assassinated by conspirators. The once-glorious empire lies in ruins, a desolate wasteland where wild beasts roam and the people hide in caves, cursing the white men who brought destruction. The tale serves as a cautionary reflection on the cost of unearned gold and the collapse of civilizations under foreign tyranny.
