In Edgar Rice Burroughs' *The Son of Tarzan*, the narrative begins with the crew of the ship *Marjorie W.* rescuing a half-wrecked Russian, Alexis Paulvitch, and his companion, a large anthropoid ape, from the Ugambi river. Paulvitch, mentally and physically broken by ten years of torture by a savage tribe, dreams of wealth but is consumed by hatred. His ape companion, initially mistaken for a beast, proves gentle until provoked, revealing a hidden intelligence that leads the crew to accept him as a member of the ship's company. Meanwhile, on the African coast, a Swedish safari led by Malbihn and Jenssen has captured Meriem, a girl raised in the jungle by an ape-man named Korak. Meriem believes she is an ape and that Korak is her only kin. When Malbihn attempts to molest her, Jenssen is killed in a struggle, and a stranger intervenes. This stranger is revealed to be Tarzan (Jack Clayton), who saves Meriem and reunites with his loyal ape, Tantor, and his son, Korak. Tarzan returns to his bungalow, where his wife, Jane, is overjoyed to see him restored to civilization. The story takes a tragic turn when Meriem learns that her former protector, Mr. Baynes, has died from his wounds. Meriem realizes her feelings for him were not love but fascination and respect; her true love is Korak. She and Korak marry, and they travel to England with Tarzan and Jane. Upon arriving in England, the Greystoke family receives a visitor: General Armand Jacot, seeking his lost daughter, Jeanne. He is brought a photograph of the girl, and Tarzan brings Meriem into the room. The General recognizes her immediately as his daughter, and Meriem recalls her past. The mystery is solved: Meriem is the long-lost princess. The novel concludes with the happy resolution of these intertwined stories, celebrating themes of identity, the bond between man and beast, and the enduring power of love and forgiveness.
