Summary up to 500 words
Set in ancient Rome, William Shakespeare's *Coriolanus* presents a tragic study of pride, political instability, and the volatile relationship between the state and its citizens. The play centers on Caius Martius, known as Coriolanus, a military genius whose brilliance is matched only by his arrogance. Following a victorious campaign against the Volscians, he returns to Rome expecting a hero's welcome. However, the city is suffering from famine, and the plebeians demand free grain. Coriolanus, unable to comprehend the plight of the common people, publicly insults them, refusing to beg for their support. This act of insolence turns the public against him. Despite the desperate pleas of his devoted mother, Volumnia, and his wife, the tribunes—representatives of the people—condemn Coriolanus to death. Forced to flee, he seeks refuge with Tullus Aufidius, the Volscian leader who had previously raised him. In Antium, Coriolanus is welcomed by Aufidius, but the political landscape in Rome shifts dramatically. The people, now led by Volumnia, petition for Coriolanus's reinstatement. Believing he can reconcile with his country, Coriolanus agrees to return. Upon his return, however, he is immediately attacked by Aufidius's conspirators, who view his return as a threat to Volscian interests. Despite the pleas of Roman lords to spare him, Coriolanus is killed in the streets of Antium. The play concludes with the Romans mourning their fallen hero, acknowledging his noble nature while lamenting the fatal consequences of his pride and the city's ingratitude. Through the fable of the belly and the body, Shakespeare explores the dangers of class division and the destructive power of unchecked ambition, illustrating how a great man can be destroyed by the very society he served.
