In Edgar Rice Burroughs' *Carson of Venus*, the narrative follows Carson Napier and Duare, the daughter of the King of Vepaja, as they flee the high-tech city of Havatoo in a sophisticated airship. Their escape is driven by a desperate need to avoid the wrath of Duare's father, the Jong of Vepaja, who is bound by an ancient, sacrosanct law forbidding any man from speaking to a virgin daughter before she turns twenty. Violation of this taboo carries the death penalty. Fearing execution, Duare insists they abandon their quest to return home, instead venturing into a vast, beautiful, yet deadly wilderness to find a new sanctuary. Their journey is fraught with peril as they hunt for food and evade fearsome beasts. The couple is eventually forced to land near a hostile city, where Carson is captured and subjected to the brutal torture chambers of the Zani Party, a regime led by the dictator Mephis. There, Carson witnesses the horrors of the dictatorship, including the imprisonment of former allies and the execution of the Jong of Korva. Demonstrating remarkable resilience and moral fortitude, Carson eventually takes charge as acting governor, secretly aiding prisoners while searching for Duare's father, Mintep. Carson eventually escapes and returns to Vepaja, only to discover that Duare has been condemned to death by the Council of Nobles for breaking the taboo. With the help of a loyal lady-in-waiting, Carson infiltrates the palace, rescues Duare from her quarters, and they flee together via a secret shaft in the great tree city. They escape into the wilderness, finding their ship intact, and head toward the kingdom of Korva. Seeking peace and safety from the tyranny that has plagued their lives, they leave behind the senseless customs and barbarous laws of Venus, hoping to find a future defined by love and freedom rather than ancient, fatalistic decrees.
