On a hot, boring day, Alice sits with her sister and falls asleep after a white rabbit with a pocket watch dashes past. Curious, Alice follows the rabbit down a deep hole, tumbling past bookshelves and jars of jam until she lands in a long hall with many locked doors. She finds a tiny golden key that fits a small door leading to a garden, but she is too large to enter. After drinking from a bottle labeled 'Drink me' to shrink, she realizes she has left the key behind. She then eats a cake labeled 'Eat me,' which causes her to grow huge, then small again, and finally giant, trapping her in a pool of her own tears. Alice encounters various strange characters, including a Mouse, a grinning Cheshire Cat, and the March Hare and the Hatter at a tea party that never ends. The Hatter explains that it is always tea-time because Time fell out with him after the Queen of Hearts ordered his execution for wasting time. Alice eventually attends a trial presided over by the King and Queen of Hearts, where executions are ordered for trivial offenses. During the chaos, Alice grows to a giant size, knocking over the jury and the court. Realizing the absurdity of her situation, she wakes up on the riverbank with her sister, concluding that her entire adventure was merely a dream.
