The story follows the legendary figure known as the "Old Hero" (Lao Yingxiong), a righteous official who protects the common people in a town plagued by bandits. One night, a bandit named Liang (also known as Liang Yizi) attempts to rob the hero but is thwarted by the hero's loyal horse and dog. The hero captures Liang, interrogates him, and learns he is a former official from the Purple Forbidden City who was framed for treason. Despite Liang's claims of innocence and his desire to clear his name, the hero, fearing further danger, decides to execute him the next morning. However, before the execution, Liang reveals that he was framed by powerful figures and that his friend, Shi Yu, is also involved in the conspiracy. The hero, moved by Liang's story, decides to spare him and instead sends him to the capital to clear his name. Along the way, the hero encounters other bandits and officials who are also involved in the conspiracy. The hero eventually reaches the capital, where he is greeted by the Emperor and the Empress, who are impressed by his loyalty and bravery. The hero is rewarded with a high position in the court and is given the title of "Grand Marshal". The story ends with the hero returning to his hometown, where he is hailed as a hero and a savior of the people.
