Summary up to 500 words
Dick, Marjorie, and Fidge are on a series of adventures with the Dodo, who claims to be extinct. They meet various creatures, including Brownies and Gnomes, and get caught up in a plot by the Court Glover and Executioner to punish the Dodo for stealing gloves. The story is full of humor and excitement as the children navigate their way through this fantastical world. The children's journey begins when they discover that their house has been flooded due to a high tide. They find an extraordinary sight in the breakfast room, with waves flowing into the room and chairs and light articles scattered about. The children decide to take a ride on the overturned table, which becomes their boat. As they drift through the garden, they meet a curious-looking creature with gloves on its feet and a blue bow around its neck. This is the Dodo, who claims to be extinct but is actually alive and well. The Dodo tells the children that he has an appointment with an Ichthyosaurus at the Equator at noon and must be off. He gives them his love for the Ichthyosaurus and asks them to tell him that the Dodo is extinct. The children are excited to meet the Panjandrum, a famous creature they have heard of. As the table drifts further through the garden, it passes under a cave where a group of Brownies or Gnomes live. They invite the children up to their home and introduce themselves as the Eterædarium, Palæotherium, Archæopteryx, and others. The Dodo is anxious about meeting these creatures because he has taken the Little Panjandrum's gloves. The Court Glover and Executioner arrive in a state balloon, searching for the Dodo. They are determined to punish him for stealing the gloves. The children try to help the Dodo, but he is too afraid to face the Court Glover and Executioner. The Eterædarium suggests that they pretend the Dodo is dead, which would mean there would be no need to execute him. However, the Executioner reveals that he does not kill anyone when he chops off their heads. Instead, he makes an effigy of his subject and chops its head off. The children are relieved that the Dodo will not be killed, but they are still worried about what will happen to him. The story is full of humor and excitement as the children navigate their way through this fantastical world.
