In P. G. Wodehouse's 1919 collection *My Man Jeeves*, the narrator Bertie Wooster recounts the extraordinary exploits of his valet, Jeeves, whose omniscient judgment and calm efficiency consistently save Bertie and his friends from social blunders and personal disasters. The collection opens with the story "Leave It to Jeeves," where Bertie's friend Corky faces disinheritance from his wealthy, bird-obsessed uncle, Alexander Worple, if he marries the artist Muriel Singer. To prevent this, Jeeves devises a scheme leveraging Worple's obsession with ornithology: he arranges for Muriel to publish a book on American birds dedicated to her uncle. This allows her to meet Worple without Corky's knowledge, successfully securing the inheritance. The second tale, "Helping Freddie," addresses the heartbreak of Bertie's friend Freddie Meadowes, whose fiancée, Angela West, has broken off their engagement. While Bertie attempts to cheer Freddie up at Marvis Bay, he discovers Angela with her aunt and a young cousin. Realizing Freddie cannot win her back, Bertie kidnaps the child and presents him to Angela, claiming Freddie has returned to rescue her relative. Grateful for the child's safety, Angela immediately forgives Freddie and resumes their engagement. In "Absent Treatment," Bertie's friend Rocky Rockmetteller is under the strict supervision of his moralistic aunt, Isabel, who has dragged him away from New York's nightlife. When Isabel discovers Rocky attending meetings of a fiery reformer named Jimmy Mundy, she is horrified. Jeeves, observing Isabel's own obsession with riding in hansom cabs, realizes she is susceptible to similar manipulations. He takes Isabel to one of Mundy's meetings, where the preacher's condemnation of the city's vices shocks her. Isabel immediately resolves to return to the country to abandon her "wicked" nephew, leaving Rocky free to enjoy his city life. Throughout these tales, Jeeves remains the architect of these solutions, while Bertie serves as the bewildered narrator who credits his valet with saving his sanity and social standing.
