Description max 80 words
In the Solar League's capital on Luna, Ambassador Stephen Silk is reassigned to the volatile planet of New Texas. Tasked with securing annexation and preventing an imminent invasion by the canine-like z'Srauff, Silk must navigate local politics, survive a local assassination attempt, and outmaneuver a gang of hired killers to save the planet from war.
Summary up to 500 words
In H. Beam Piper and John J. McGuire's *Lone Star Planet*, seasoned diplomat Stephen Silk is transferred from Luna to New Texas, a planet inhabited by isolationist Texans descended from Terra emigrants. His mission is threefold: investigate the recent assassination of his predecessor, Silas Cumshaw; persuade the Texans to join the Solar League for protection against the z'Srauff; and expose the alien race's invasion plans. Upon arrival, Silk is immediately thrust into danger when a waiter attempts to assassinate President Hutchinson during a barbecue. Silk shoots the assassin, revealing a plot orchestrated by local gangster Snake-Eyes Sam Bonney, who hired three outlaws—the Bonney brothers—to kill Cumshaw. The brothers are arrested and brought to trial, where the defense argues they were merely witnesses. Despite evidence pointing to their guilt, the judge acquits them, causing the courtroom to erupt. Realizing the Bonneys are about to escape and that the z'Srauff invasion is imminent, Silk takes matters into his own hands. He confronts the acquitted killers, shooting the leader in the head before they can fire back. With the immediate threat neutralized, Silk uses the incident to expose the conspiracy to the z'Srauff Ambassador, leading to a massive Solar League fleet intercepting the invaders. The novel concludes with the ratification of an annexation treaty, though Silk remains on New Texas, marrying a local rancher's daughter and continuing to oppose League policies with uncanny foresight.
