On May the fifth, the world plunged into unnatural darkness when the sun failed to rise, a catastrophe orchestrated by the mad scientist Preston. Utilizing a device on Metinic Island, Preston blocked sunlight to demand global submission as Emperor of Earth. Without solar warmth, temperatures plummeted rapidly; within days, agriculture faced destruction and freezing threatened to render the planet uninhabitable. Police Inspector Hines and scientist Professor Schaaf, accompanied by Hines's fiancée Kathryn, flew to the island to confront the threat. Upon arrival, they discovered Preston possessed a terrifying weapon: waves capable of instantly freezing matter. This technology rendered steel brittle and weapons useless, as demonstrated when Preston effortlessly destroyed three Allied bombing planes attempting to attack his stronghold. Despite the loss of their aircraft and the freezing of their own equipment, Hines and Schaaf devised a desperate bluff. They convinced Preston that the entire world had been equipped with his own technology to fight back. In a tense standoff, Hines overpowered Preston, destroying the darkness-transmitter just moments before the scheduled sunrise. The sun emerged, saving the world from eternal winter. The story concludes with Hines and Kathryn getting married, while Schaaf begins researching Preston's discoveries to develop weather control and limitless power generation, potentially ending the world's reliance on coal and oil.
