In L. Leslie Brooke's charming retelling of 'The Story of the Three Little Pigs,' an old sow, unable to provide for her offspring, sends her three little pigs out into the world to seek their fortune. The first pig encounters a man carrying a bundle of straw and promptly builds a house. His efforts are quickly undone by a cunning wolf who, after being politely refused entry, huffs and puffs until the fragile structure collapses, allowing the wolf to devour the unsuspecting pig. The second pig, learning from his brother's mistake, gathers a bundle of furze to construct a more substantial dwelling. However, the wolf returns, and despite the second pig's pleas, the predator eventually blows the furze house down with great effort, consuming the second pig as well. The narrative then shifts to the third pig, who meets a man carrying bricks. Recognizing the need for strength, the third pig builds a sturdy house of brick, a fortress against the wolf's breath. When the wolf arrives at the brick house, his huffing and puffing prove futile; the structure stands firm. Undeterred, the wolf employs deception, inviting the pig to a field of turnips, then an apple orchard, and finally a town fair. Each time, the pig uses his wits to escape. At the fair, the pig purchases a butter churn and, upon seeing the wolf approaching, hides inside. The churn rolls down the hill, terrifying the wolf and causing him to flee. The pig reveals his trick, but the enraged wolf vows to come down the chimney. Anticipating this final assault, the pig hangs a pot of water over a blazing fire. Just as the wolf descends, the pig removes the cover, dropping the predator into the boiling water. The pig promptly covers the pot again, boils the wolf, and eats him for supper. The story concludes with the third pig living happily ever after, having outsmarted the wolf through preparation and courage.
