C. M. Kornbluth's "The Marching Morons" presents a chilling alternate history where humanity has regressed due to the deliberate actions of a small, intelligent elite. The story follows Honest John Barlow, a wealthy real estate dealer from 1988, who is accidentally placed in suspended animation by a dentist's error. Centuries later, potter Efim Hawkins excavates Barlow's casket and revives him. Upon waking, Barlow discovers a bizarre future where technology has stagnated, cars move at walking speeds, and the average population possesses an IQ of 45. Initially terrified, Barlow assumes he is being hunted by a secret police. He soon meets Tinny-Peete, a psychist, who reveals the grim reality: the original elite, including Barlow, were selfish and foresighted, choosing not to have children. Meanwhile, the less intelligent majority bred rapidly, leading to a population explosion that overwhelmed Earth's resources. To prevent total collapse, a small group of descendants of the original elite formed a closed corporation to manage the world. They engineered a society where the average citizen is intellectually incapable of complex thought or innovation, effectively creating a slave class that cannot organize against their masters. The elite, numbering only a few million, control everything from traffic to government, while the billions of others are kept ignorant and content with simple pleasures. The narrative culminates in a massive emigration program to Venus. Senator Hull-Mendoza pushes a bill to send entire cities to the planet, effectively emptying the Earth of its non-elite population to preserve the elite's way of life. The story ends with the last of the original elite, including Barlow, being sent off in a spaceship, leaving the Earth to the "morons" they created. It is a sharp, satirical critique of eugenics, the dangers of complacency, and the fragility of civilization.
