In the novel 1900; or, The Last President by Ingersoll Lockwood, a presidential election in 1896 sparks chaos in New York City. Mobs of Anarchists and Socialists threaten to plunder and despoil the houses of the rich, but Governor Morton orders the Seventh, Twenty-second, and Seventy-first regiments to be put under arms. The city is on the brink of collapse until the troops arrive and drive back the mob. Meanwhile, Congress debates a bill to extend the Pension System of the United States to the Soldiers of the Confederate Armies. The novel explores themes of social change, rebellion, and the struggle for power. In the midst of this chaos, President-elect Bryan is elected, and his supporters celebrate in the streets. However, their jubilation is short-lived as the mob turns violent, and the police are forced to intervene. The troops eventually arrive, and the situation is brought under control. The novel also delves into the world of politics, where a bill to extend pensions to Confederate soldiers is being debated in Congress. The leaders of the administration forces are determined to pass the bill, but they face opposition from the Rlican minority. As the debate rages on, tensions rise, and the situation becomes increasingly volatile. In a dramatic turn of events, the President-elect appears at the bar of the House, pleading with his countrymen to calm their passions and listen to him. However, he is rebuffed by the Speaker, who insists that he must withdraw. The President's presence is met with a deafening roar from the crowd, but eventually, silence falls, and he begins to speak. He calls upon the Senate to meet him in the Chamber and pleads for calm, but his words are cut short by the Speaker's gavel. The situation escalates further as the dome of the Capitol is destroyed by dynamite, and the Rlican Senators and Representatives pass slowly out of the disfigured building. In the end, the bill is passed, but at a great cost, and the Rlic of Washington has died peacefully, leaving behind a shattered dome and a nation in chaos.
