The Marvelous Land of Oz by L. Frank Baum is a story about Tip, a young boy who lives with his guardian Mombi in the Land of Oz. Tip creates a wooden man called Jack Pumpkinhead using magical powder and brings him to life. They join forces with other characters, including the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and Gump, to travel through the air in search of adventure and wisdom. Along the way, they encounter various obstacles and challenges, but ultimately reach their destination and learn valuable lessons about friendship and teamwork. The story begins with Tip living with Mombi in the Country of the Gillikins. He is a young boy who remembers nothing of his parents, as he was brought to be reared by Mombi when quite young. Mombi's reputation is not the best, as she is suspected of indulging in magical arts. However, Tip does not seem to mind her behavior and often plays tricks on her. One day, while carrying pumpkins from the cornfields to the stable, Tip decides to make a 'Jack Lantern' and try to frighten Mombi with it. He selects a big pumpkin and begins carving it, making two round eyes, a three-cornered nose, and a mouth shaped like a new moon. The face is not beautiful, but it wears a broad smile that makes Tip laugh. Tip decides to manufacture the form of a man who will wear this pumpkin head and stand in a place where Mombi will meet it face-to-face. He takes his axe to the forest and selects some straight saplings to make the arms, legs, and feet of his man. For the body, he strips a sheet of thick bark from around a big tree and fashions it into a cylinder. Tip brings the wooden man back to the house and stands it against the wall. He admires his work and decides to give it a neck by fastening a cross-piece to the upper end of the body. He puts on the pumpkin head, which fits well, and dresses the creature in a jaunty fashion using Mombi's purple trousers, a red shirt, and a pink vest. Tip names his creation 'Jack Pumpkinhead' and decides to give it life using magical powder. He sprinkles the powder over Jack's body and head, but forgets to bring the legs of the sofas to life first. The Gump gives a screeching cry as it comes to life, and the four wings begin flopping furiously. The Thing shudders throughout its bulk, and Tip manages to grasp a chimney to avoid being blown off the roof by the terrible breeze raised by the wings. The Scarecrow is caught up bodily and borne through the air until Tip seizes him by one leg and holds him fast. The Woggle-Bug lies flat upon the roof and escapes harm, while the Tin Woodman throws his arms around Jack Pumpkinhead to save him. The Saw-Horse topples over onto its back and waves its legs helplessly above it. The Gump rises slowly...
