In the remote, decaying village of Dunwich, Massachusetts, the Whateley family has long been feared for their association with witchcraft and strange rites. Lavinia Whateley, a deformed albino woman living with her half-insane father, gives birth to a dark, goatish infant named Wilbur. Unlike his mother, Wilbur possesses immense physical strength and intelligence, but he is not fully human. As he grows, he exhibits grotesque mutations, including a crocodile-like chest, tentacles, and multiple eyes. His family's livestock suffer mysterious deaths, and the local environment becomes increasingly hostile, with strange noises, foul odors, and the haunting cries of whippoorwills. Wilbur's existence attracts the attention of outsiders, including scholars from Arkham. Despite attempts to contain him, Wilbur's condition deteriorates, and he begins to summon entities from other dimensions using fragments of the forbidden Necronomicon. The creature becomes a hybrid of man and monster, growing to a monstrous size while retaining a semblance of human features. The local community, terrified by the unfolding horror, barricades themselves against the encroaching evil. The climax occurs when Wilbur, now a colossal entity, ascends Sentinel Hill to perform a ritual that threatens to tear reality apart. Scholars from Arkham intervene, using a special powder to make the creature visible and then incanting spells to banish it back to its extradimensional origin. A cataclysmic event follows, destroying the creature and leaving the landscape scarred. The horror is contained, but the damage to the world and the Whateley legacy remains, leaving the villagers shaken and the region forever tainted by the memory of the Dunwich Horror.
