In the quiet neighborhood of Pleasant Valley, strange tracks on the road lead the local field and forest folk to a mysterious new arrival. Identified by little Mr. Chippy as having eight long legs, the newcomer is dubbed 'Daddy Longlegs.' Despite his appearance, he is timid, friendly, and surprisingly young, though his neighbors assume he is a venerable sage. Daddy Longlegs quickly becomes a sought-after advisor, much to the jealousy of the old Mr. Crow, who challenges him to a contest of wisdom. The contest ends in a tie, establishing Daddy's reputation as a peer to the wise Mr. Crow. Daddy Longlegs' life takes a turn when a fierce wind traps him in a hollow tree while he attempts to attend a party. There, he meets Sandy Chipmunk, who suggests a daring plan: ride home in Farmer Green's wagon. To board, Daddy must stop the horse, Ebenezer, by standing in the road. With Sandy waving his tail to distract the driver, Johnnie Green, Daddy successfully boards the wagon, only to find the horse drinking water at a trough, delaying their journey. Upon arrival, Johnnie Green captures Daddy, mistaking his frantic leg movements for directions to a lost jackknife. Daddy escapes, but the struggle results in the loss of one of his legs. The accident leaves Daddy with only seven legs, causing his neighbors to debate his changed appearance. Solomon Owl wisely suggests asking Daddy himself, who cheerfully admits his injury. His friends decide to rename him 'Grandfather Graybeard' to avoid mentioning his missing limb, a name he happily accepts until his new wife, a larger female Daddy Longlegs, arrives. She objects to the name, revealing that Daddy is actually quite young and that the 'old age' was a misconception. The story concludes with the revelation of his true youth and his new family, ending on a note of warmth and acceptance.
