In Thornton W. Burgess's *The Adventures of Buster Bear*, the story begins with Buster Bear enjoying a successful morning of fishing in the Laughing Brook. His luck, however, is short-lived when he frightens Little Joe Otter, who drops a fine trout. Mistaking the otter's panic for a joke, Buster invites him to take the fish back, but the angry otter refuses. Buster eats the trout and continues fishing, only to find every pool muddy and devoid of fish. He deduces that Little Joe is seeking revenge. Meanwhile, Little Joe and Billy Mink realize they have been unfairly excluding a skilled fisherman. They decide to make amends, approaching Buster and his friends to praise his abilities and admit that Farmer Brown's boy is indeed terrified of him. The animals gather to witness a planned confrontation between Farmer Brown's boy and Buster. When they finally meet face-to-face, the boy screams and flees in terror, confirming the animals' fears. Surprisingly, Buster is also terrified by the boy's loud yell and runs away, accidentally carrying the boy's milk pail with him. Sammy Jay and Blacky the Crow spot Buster fleeing with the pail and scream "Thief!" The entire forest gathers to mock the embarrassed bear. Humiliated, Buster retreats into a hollow tree, where his temper flares. He destroys the pail until the handle breaks, freeing him. Once his anger subsides, Buster feels deep shame for his outburst, realizing he should have known better than to put his head in the pail. The story concludes with Farmer Brown's boy laughing at the absurdity of the situation. He realizes that while he lost his berries and sandwiches to a bear and a coyote, it could have been much worse. The narrative highlights themes of misunderstanding, the dangers of hasty judgment, and the importance of forgiveness, as the animals eventually reconcile their differences and appreciate Buster's true character.
