In Volume II of *The Tales of the Heptameron*, Queen Margaret of Navarre presents a collection of narratives where nobles and ladies gather to exchange stories that serve as moral lessons on human nature, love, and power. The volume opens with the tale of Bornet, a husband who, intending to seduce his own maid-servant with the help of a friend, unknowingly sleeps with his virtuous wife. The deception is revealed only when the friend wears the wife's ring, leading Bornet to despair until his wife exposes his hypocrisy and reconciles the marriage. Another narrative recounts the historical assassination of the tyrant Duke Alexander de' Medici by his cousin, Lorenzino. Acting to save his sister's honor from the Duke's debauchery, Lorenzino kills the tyrant, sparking a debate among the company on whether regicide was a justifiable act of filial duty or a grave crime of ingratitude. The ladies defend Lorenzino's honor, while the men condemn the treachery. A third story features a sea captain who, having neglected his wife for a mistress, demonstrates his repentance by sending a diamond intended for the mistress to his wife instead. This gesture successfully reunites the couple in affection. The volume also includes the tale of the Countess of Milan, who tests the courage of her suitor, M. de Bonnivet, by feigning terror and summoning armed guards. His bravery in the face of the ruse wins her love. Historical anecdotes are woven throughout, such as King Francis I's magnanimous handling of the traitorous Count William of Furstemberg, who is spared execution and ransomed instead. Throughout these tales, the characters debate the nature of true love, the dangers of lust, and the responsibilities of power, revealing how virtue and vice are often intertwined in the human heart. The collection concludes with reflections on the fickleness of fortune and the importance of conscience.
