In Burt L. Standish's *Frank Merriwell's Cruise*, the intrepid hero Frank Merriwell acquires the yacht *White Wings* through a surprising bargain with Walter Pringle, who is fleeing to Alaska. Merriwell invites his close friends—Jack Diamond, Hodge, Browning, and Hans Dunnerwust—to join him for a summer voyage down the Maine coast. Before departing, the group secures matching uniforms from Boston tailors and encounters Inza Burrage and Paula Benjamin, who plan a trip to Bar Harbor. Upon reaching Camden, the crew enjoys a thrilling baseball victory against the Rockland team. During the game, manager Wat Snell attempts to drug Merriwell with a vial of poison, but the plot is thwarted by the team's manager, French, leading to Snell's arrest. The celebration is cut short when the boys discover a mysterious note on Devil Island warning them to flee, fearing Merriwell has been captured. Desperate, they search the island and find a fake grave containing Merriwell's hand, leading them to believe he has been buried alive. Just as despair sets in, a mysterious figure named Caleb Cooler claims Merriwell is safe. The next morning, Browning digs up the grave, revealing Merriwell trapped inside a hollowed-out mound connected to a secret cave used by counterfeiters. Dustin Douglass, posing as Cooler, reveals himself as a Secret Service agent who has captured the gang, including Hicks and Wiley, who mistakenly believed Merriwell was involved in their crimes. The book concludes with the mystery solved, the villains arrested, and the friends ready to continue their cruise, having faced danger and triumphed together.
