In J. S. Fletcher's *Ravensdene Court*, Leonard Middlebrook, a London expert on antiquities, travels to the remote Northumbrian coast to inspect the vast, disorganized library of Ravensdene Court. There, he meets Septimus Cazalette, a numismatist, and is soon drawn into a mystery involving a strange sailor named Salter Quick. Quick is desperately searching for a churchyard bearing the name 'Netherfield,' a quest linked to a hidden treasure of stolen church plate that had been concealed by the Raven family centuries prior. The narrative reveals that the plate, originally belonging to the Forestburne family, was stolen by a dishonest bank manager and his accomplice, Netherfield Baxter, a former bank manager and thief who vanished after the heist. Baxter was later found dead, and shortly thereafter, Salter Quick was murdered, suggesting a ruthless gang was eliminating anyone who knew the secret of the hidden loot. Middlebrook and Cazalette investigate the theft of a tobacco box and a pocketbook at an inquest, realizing the killers were protecting their secret by destroying evidence. The plot intensifies with the arrival of Wing, a Chinese cook, and the enigmatic 'Chinese gentleman.' These characters lead to a dramatic confrontation aboard a yacht, where the treasure is finally secured. The story resolves with the police clearing the innocent parties, including Wing, who had been framed. It is revealed that the treasure was indeed the stolen plate, now safely in the possession of the rightful heirs, bringing an end to the deadly game of cat and mouse that had plagued the Northumbrian coast.
