In Mary Macgregor's *Stories of Siegfried, Told to the Children*, the legendary hero Siegfried rises from humble beginnings to become a figure of immense strength and tragic fate. Born a prince to King Siegmund and Queen Sieglinde, Siegfried is raised in the forest by the dwarf blacksmith Mimer. As he grows, his physical power outpaces his patience, leading him to torment the dwarf. Mimer, fearing for the boy's safety, sends Siegfried into the deep woods to fetch charcoal, unaware that Siegfried's brother, the dragon Regin, lies in wait. Siegfried slays the dragon and, following the advice of the Nibelungs, bathes in the beast's blood. This grants him invulnerability everywhere except for a tiny spot on his shoulder where a linden leaf had fallen. Siegfried's adventures continue as he travels to Isenland, where he defeats the warrior-queen Brunhild and captures her magic horse. Returning to Burgundy, he aids King Gunther in battle, capturing enemy kings. During a festival in Worms, Siegfried meets Princess Kriemhild, Gunther's sister, and falls deeply in love with her. Despite Gunther's desire for Siegfried to remain, the hero prepares to return home. However, Gunther plans to marry the formidable Brunhild and asks Siegfried to accompany him to Isenland to help win her hand. Treachery brews among the court. Hagen, a sinister counselor, plots against Siegfried. Learning from Kriemhild that the hero's only weak spot is the scar on his shoulder, Hagen arranges a hunt where Siegfried is wounded by a bear. Later, during a race to a spring, Hagen stabs Siegfried through the vulnerable spot while the hero drinks. Mortally wounded, Siegfried entrusts Kriemhild to Gunther's care before dying. Kriemhild mourns him for thirteen years. During this time, Hagen seizes the Nibelung treasure and buries it in the Rhine. Eventually, Kriemhild marries Etzel, King of the Huns. When Hagen refuses to return the treasure, Kriemhild orders the Burgundians killed, avenging Siegfried's death and bringing a tragic end to the heroic age.
