Published in 1850, Horatio Alger Jr.'s *The Young Adventurer; or, Tom's Trip Across the Plains* chronicles the journey of Tom Nelson, a sixteen-year-old boy from a struggling farming family in Wilton. Facing financial hardship and his father's advice against remaining a farmer, Tom resolves to seek his fortune, inspired by newspaper accounts of California's gold rush. However, he lacks the two hundred dollars required for the trip. His journey begins with a profound moral test: while picking huckleberries, Tom discovers a wallet containing five hundred and sixty-seven dollars belonging to the wealthy but ruthless Squire Hudson. Despite the temptation to use the funds for his journey, Tom returns the money, deciding that dishonesty would ruin his future prospects. This integrity soon leads to trouble. In Cincinnati, Tom is falsely accused of pickpocketing a lady by Vincent, a gambler and former bank teller who has fled to the West. Although Tom protests his innocence, the crowd and a policeman believe him guilty. His defense is interrupted by the arrival of Alderman Morris, a powerful official who recognizes Tom's roommate, Mr. Nicholas Waterbury. Morris vouches for Waterbury's character and arrests Vincent instead, clearing Tom's name. However, Tom is not yet safe. He is later captured by a band of hostile Indians while traveling alone. During his captivity, he attempts to entertain them with magic tricks, earning their respect but not their trust. His escape comes through divine intervention; a massive herd of buffalo charges the Indian camp, trampling the warriors and horses to death, leaving Tom alone on the plains. Tom survives the stampede and rides until he spots a solitary horseman, John Miles, who turns out to be a friend from his original party. The group is relieved to find him, as they had feared he was lost or dead. Together, they continue their journey to California, finally reaching the Sierra Nevada mountains and gazing upon the promised land of gold. The novel concludes with the group descending toward the gold fields, emphasizing that hard work and moral character are the true paths to success, rather than mere luck or dishonesty.
