Edward Prendick recounts his harrowing survival on a remote island where a mad scientist, Dr. Moreau, has created a society of "Beast Folk"—humans surgically altered from animals. Bound by a cruel "Law," these creatures struggle against their primal instincts. When the Law fails, Prendick must flee the island alone, forever haunted by the terrifying realization that humanity itself may be merely a fragile veneer over bestial nature.

In H. G. Wells' *The Island of Doctor Moreau*, the narrator, Edward Prendick, recounts his harrowing eleven-month survival on a remote volcanic islet after being rescued from the lost schooner *Lady Vain*. He discovers the island is the domain of Dr. Moreau, a scientist who has spent years creating the "Beast Folk": humans surgically altered from various animals and forced to adhere to a strict moral code known as "The Law." This artificial order forbids eating meat, drinking from streams, harming one another, or scratching trees. Prendick witnesses the grotesque creations, including Leopard-men, Swine-men, and Satyr-like creatures, initially obeying the Law with terrifying discipline. However, the fragile civilization begins to crumble. Prendick discovers a dead rabbit with its head torn off and later finds a Saint-Bernard-man dead, being devoured by a Hyena-swine. These incidents signal the inevitable decay of Moreau's experiment; the animal instincts within the humans are reasserting their dominance. As the Beast Folk revert to their savage natures, Prendick realizes he cannot stay. He builds a raft and escapes the island, leaving behind the dying remnants of the Beast Folk. After a perilous journey across the ocean, he is picked up by a brig. Upon returning to civilization, Prendick finds that his experience has fundamentally altered his perception of humanity. He fears that the people around him are merely animals in disguise, waiting to revert to their bestial instincts. Haunted by the terrifying possibility that the human soul is not as distinct from the animal as he once believed, he retreats from society. He finds solace only in solitude, books, and the stars, haunted by the lingering terror that the degradation of the Islanders will be played out again on a larger scale among his fellow men.
