Summary up to 500 words
In Jacob Abbott's *William the Conqueror*, a volume of the *Makers of History* series, the narrative chronicles the rise of William, Duke of Normandy, from his Scandinavian roots to his conquest of England. The story begins by establishing Normandy as a rich province settled by Northmen, governed by independent Dukes. The first duke, Rollo, founded the duchy through military prowess and treaties with the French king, Charles the Simple. The focus then shifts to William's relationship with King Harold of England. After Harold is shipwrecked and captured by Count Guy of Ponthieu, William ransoms him and hosts him with lavish hospitality. During this visit, William secures Harold's support for his claim to the English throne. To bind Harold, William proposes marriage alliances, detains Harold's brother as a hostage, and forces him to take a solemn public oath before a great assembly to aid William in securing the succession. William's ambition is abruptly halted by a sudden accident. While ravaging France and ravaging the town of Mantes, his horse steps on burning embers, causing William to suffer a fatal internal injury. Before dying, he bequeaths England to his son William Rufus and Normandy to his son Robert. Upon his death, his household abandons his body in disgrace, stripping it of valuables. However, the body is eventually transported to Caen for burial. During the procession, a local landowner successfully claims the right to the burial site, forbidding the interment of the 'spoiler' on his ground. The burial is further complicated when the sarcophagus breaks, causing the decomposing body to burst, forcing the monks to abandon the church. Meanwhile, William Rufus travels to England, is proclaimed king, and secures the Norman succession, while Robert accepts Normandy, concluding the transition of power.
