Summary up to 500 words
In the third volume of *The Strange Adventures of Captain Dangerous*, George Augustus Sala continues the rollicking, old-fashioned narrative of his protagonist, Captain John Dangerous. By 1748, the Captain, a man of valour but slender means, finds himself in London after leaving the Tower. He attempts to make a living through gambling and serving as a dueling second for the nobility, notably the Earl of Modesley. His romantic prospects are thwarted by Miss Jenny Lightfoot, a volatile milliner who insults him and squanders her dowry, leading to a violent but ultimately friendly resolution with her patron. Unable to settle down, the Captain travels to Brussels, where he briefly dabbles in alchemy and magic with a charlatan named Ferdinando Carolyi before fleeing to Paris to escape religious persecution. In Paris, he survives by performing as a fiery Fury in an opera ballet. His life takes a dramatic turn when he saves a young English dancing girl, Lillias, from a stage fire. Lillias is the daughter of an exiled Englishman, Mr. Lovell. Through the intervention of the French Ambassador and the Grand Turk, the Captain is allowed to assume the guise of a Turkish Bashaw. This ruse allows him to secretly travel to Constantinople and retrieve his wife, Lillias, and their daughter, who had been living under the protection of the French Embassy. The reunited family travels through Russia, visiting Odessa and Moscow. In Moscow, the Captain's temper flares when a young officer steals a snuffbox from his wife; the Captain beats the officer, leading to a lengthy but ultimately resolved legal inquiry. They eventually move to St. Petersburg, where the Captain is introduced to Empress Catherine the Great. Despite offers of high military rank, the weary Captain declines further service. After his wife's death in Paris in 1773, the aged Captain returns to England. He purchases his grandmother's ancestral home in Hanover Square, repairs it, and settles down to write his memoirs, bringing his globe-trotting exploits to a close.
