In *Frank Merriwell Down South* by Burt L. Standish, the narrative follows the adventures of Frank Merriwell, his chum Barney Mulloy, and Professor Scotch as they embark on a series of perilous quests across Mexico, New Orleans, and Florida. Their journey begins in Mexico, where they arrive to investigate the dying claims of a man who believes he discovered the mythical Silver Palace. Before succumbing to illness and poison, the man reveals that his partner, Alwin Bushnell, stole the treasure and fled with a balloon. He provides Frank with a gold Aztec idol and a map as proof. Their search is interrupted by a chaotic shootout with bandits led by the ruthless Pacheco. Amidst the confusion, Frank mistakenly shoots at the pursuers, only to discover the fugitive is actually Bushnell, who was hiding from the bandits. The group eventually continues their quest, though the treasure remains elusive. The story then shifts to New Orleans, where Frank and Barney rescue Inza, the daughter of Colonel Vallier, from the clutches of the villainous Rolf Raymond. Raymond, a wealthy but jealous suitor, had kidnapped Inza to force a marriage arranged by her father and his own father. Frank and Barney fight their way through Raymond's gang of ruffians, ultimately killing Raymond in the process. Inza's father is relieved upon learning his daughter is safe, and the police pursue the remaining criminals, though they eventually disappear. Next, the trio travels to Florida to hunt for a legendary golden heron in the Everglades. Despite Professor Scotch's skepticism that the bird is a myth, Frank insists on finding it using only a bow and arrow to avoid scaring the flock. Deep in the swamp, they encounter Muriel, a mysterious boy moonshiner whom Frank and Barney suspect is a girl in disguise. Their investigation leads to a dangerous confrontation with Wade Miller, a criminal running a moonshine still who plans to burn the boys. Just as Miller prepares to light the match, Muriel is revealed to be Kate Kenyon, the sister of Rufe Kenyon. Rufe arrives with reinforcements, rescuing the boys and shooting Miller. It is disclosed that Kate had cut her hair and worn a wig to disguise herself, aided by a mute accomplice named Dummy who mimicked her movements. After Miller is hanged by his own men, the group departs for the West, concluding their current adventures in the book.
