In Edgar Rice Burroughs' *Lost on Venus*, the narrative follows Carson Napier, a brilliant scientist and adventurer, whose journey to Mars is derailed when his rocket is diverted to Venus, known to its inhabitants as Amtor. Upon arrival, Napier is immediately captured by the Thorians, a hostile faction intent on overthrowing the established governments of the planet. During the chaos, he witnesses the abduction of Duare, the beloved daughter of the Jong of Vepaja, by the same group. Left behind with Duare's rescuer, Nalte, Napier must evade the Thorians and their monstrous Kazar beasts while searching for the princess. The duo traverses the treacherous landscape of Venus, encountering hairy wild men and the eerie sight of intelligent dead men animated by the sorcerer Skor. They face the oligarchy of ignorance ruling the city of Kapdor and the perilous River of Death. Eventually, they discover that Duare is held captive in Havatoo, the capital of Vepaja, under the protection of Hara Es. However, Duare is resigned to death due to the restrictive customs of her royal lineage and her own despair. Realizing she cannot survive in her current state, Napier makes a desperate bid to save her. He kidnaps both Duare and Hara Es, escaping the city just as alarms are raised. Fleeing to a hangar, Napier boards a silent, advanced aircraft designed for training. As sirens wail and rifles fire from pursuing guards, he pilots the ship through the Gate of the Physicists, escaping into the night. Flying over the River of Death toward the sea and the homeland of Vepaja, the pair finds a moment of respite. Duare, initially trembling with fear, asks why Napier makes such a sacrifice. He explains that he cannot return to Havatoo if she is not safe. In a pivotal moment, Duare reveals that she has learned to love him, declaring, "I love you!" Napier, previously believing she could not love him due to her age and status, embraces her. The story concludes with the couple flying toward freedom and a future together, leaving the dangers of Venus behind them.
