Summary up to 500 words

In William MacLeod Raine's *The Pirate of Panama*, a bored San Francisco lawyer named John Sedgwick discovers a mysterious, yellowed map in the gutter that hints at a lost pirate treasure on a peninsula known as Doubloon Spit. Immediately pursued by a menacing man in a frogged coat, John flees and eventually joins Captain Blythe's crew aboard the schooner *Argos*. Their mission is to sail to Panama and recover the gold sunk by the pirate ship *Santa Theresa*. Upon arrival, they discover the treasure is guarded by Captain Bothwell, a ruthless pirate leader who has taken over local operations. Tensions rise as the crew faces mutiny from Bothwell's men. A violent battle ensues on the ship, resulting in casualties but ultimately securing the treasure for the *Argos* crew. After a moral debate regarding the rightful ownership of the gold, the crew decides to keep it, as the original owners were wiped out by an earthquake decades prior. The story concludes with the crew dividing the spoils, the mutineers being set ashore, and John Sedgwick finding romance with Miss Evelyn Wallace. The narrative captures the spirit of adventure, loyalty, and the transition from a life of mundane legal work to one of high-seas excitement.
