In 1865, five Americans—engineer Cyrus Smith, reporter Gideon Spilett, sailor Pencroff, enslaved man Neb, and young Herbert—flee the besieged Confederate capital of Richmond by escaping in a hot-air balloon. Caught in a violent hurricane, their balloon crashes into the Pacific Ocean, and the group miraculously survives to wash ashore on an unknown island they name Lincoln Island. They are joined by a mysterious castaway named Ayrton, whom they rescue from a cave. Upon landing, the group discovers the island is inhabited by a giant orangutan named Top and a dog named Jup. They establish a settlement called Granite House, utilizing their diverse skills to survive. Cyrus Smith applies his engineering knowledge to build a ship, create glass, and cultivate crops, including discovering a bread-tree. The colony prospers, but tensions rise as they realize the island is geologically unstable. Mount Franklin, a volcano on the island, begins to show signs of eruption. Despite their efforts to reinforce their defenses and launch their ship, the volcano erupts catastrophically. The entire island is swallowed by the sea, leaving only a small rock where Granite House once stood. The survivors cling to this rock, facing certain death from hunger and thirst. Just as hope seems lost, the yacht Duncan arrives, commanded by Captain Robert Grant, searching for Ayrton. The survivors are rescued. It is revealed that Captain Nemo, the enigmatic mastermind behind the Nautilus, had secretly guided the Duncan to the island to save them, fulfilling a final act of kindness before his own demise. The survivors return to America, where they use the treasure from Nemo's coffer to establish a new colony in Iowa, forever remembering their time on the mysterious island.
