In this speculative utopia, humanity retreats from industrialization to a harmonious society in Leiden. Rejecting machinery and synthetic goods, the 'Harmonischen' embrace vegetarianism, handcrafted living, and separated gender education. However, their perfection leads to stagnation, loss of individuality, and eventual decline as mechanistic intuition replaces personal will, inviting a new threat from the shadows.

In Bernard Alexander Canter's *Nieuw Utopia*, Professor Leyden awakens from a coma to discover he is no longer in his hospital bed, but in a strange, alternate dimension. Here, he is reunited with Eumenia, a woman he recognizes from a past life in Leiden. She explains that while humanity fled to milder climates, a select group remained behind to regenerate mankind. Rejecting the 'barbaric' pursuit of science for its own sake, they formed the 'Harmonischen.' In this society, women abandoned academia to focus on intuitive arts and weaving, while men crafted furniture and built homes suited to their souls. They adopted vegetarianism, rejecting industrial waste and animal slaughter. Over generations, their society achieved a terrifying uniformity. Children looked alike, and everyone thought and acted identically. This loss of individuality led to a fatal decline: memory failed, personal will vanished, and the population became passive, mimicking ancestors like ants. Without the personal struggle against sin or Satan, no higher virtue could develop. The society stagnated, eventually succumbing to a plague of giant rats that fed on their blood, as the people had forgotten how to defend themselves. Professor Leyden realizes that a perfect, uniform society without individual choice is a death sentence. He returns to his role as a doctor, dedicating his life to treating patients and proving that true perfection lies in individual effort and love, not in collective uniformity. The narrative underscores the necessity of personal struggle and individuality for spiritual and societal growth, contrasting the sterile perfection of the Harmonischen with the vibrant, albeit flawed, reality of human experience.
