In R. Austin Freeman's *The Blue Scarab*, Dr. Thorndyke and his assistant Jervis investigate two distinct but thematically linked cases that showcase the power of forensic science. The first involves Mr. Blowgrave, whose deed-box containing share certificates and a blue scarab is stolen during a staged fire. Two weeks later, the contents are returned via a parcel sealed with a scarab impression and a letter from a pseudonym, 'Rudolpho.' While the scarab is revealed to be a worthless imitation, the case hints at a dark family history involving Silas Blowgrave, who allegedly murdered his brother Reuben over a stolen jewel collection and fled to Egypt. Thorndyke notes the discrepancy between the family's oral tradition and the physical evidence, suggesting the scarab's return is a ruse to keep the family's secret alive. The second, more complex case concerns the death of Reginald Reed, found burned in a rick. Initially identified by the police, the body presents a forensic anomaly: a pristine dental plate found among the ashes lacks the tobacco stains expected of Reed, a known pipe-smoker. Thorndyke deduces that the body was swapped; Reed had murdered his business partner, Walter Jarman, and assumed Jarman's identity to collect on a life insurance policy. During the inquest, Thorndyke presents dental evidence proving the remains belong to Jarman. He further exposes that the witness giving evidence as 'Arthur Gerrard' was actually Reed in disguise, having altered his appearance with a moustache, spectacles, and a mole. When confronted with this revelation, Reed/Gerrard attempts to flee, is stopped by police, and commits suicide. The narrative highlights Thorndyke's unique ability to isolate essential facts, such as dental work and tobacco residue, to unravel crimes of deception and identity theft.
