In L. Frank Baum's *The Wonderful Wizard of Oz*, a young girl named Dorothy Gale is swept from her Kansas home by a cyclone into the magical Land of Oz. There, she meets three companions: a Scarecrow seeking brains, a Tin Woodman yearning for a heart, and a Cowardly Lion in need of courage. Together, they journey toward the Emerald City to seek the Great Wizard's help. Their path is fraught with danger, including the Wicked Witch of the West, who enslaves the Winkies and rules the Land of the West. The group faces numerous obstacles, such as the Deadly Poppy Field, where they are saved by the Queen of the Field Mice, and the Hammer-Heads, a tribe of armless men with heads that shoot out from rocks. With the aid of the Winged Monkeys, summoned via Dorothy's Golden Cap, the travelers overcome these perils and eventually defeat the Wicked Witch, causing her to melt in a bucket of water. Upon reaching the Emerald City, the group meets the Great Wizard, who tests their resolve before granting their wishes. However, the Wizard is revealed to be a humbug, a man using magic tricks and projections to appear as a powerful sorcerer. Despite this revelation, the friends realize they have already gained the qualities they sought: the Scarecrow demonstrates wisdom through his advice, the Tin Woodman shows compassion by saving a mouse, and the Lion proves his bravery by defeating a giant spider. Glinda the Good Witch then grants Dorothy's true wish: to return home to Aunt Em. Using the power of her Silver Shoes, Dorothy travels back to Kansas in three steps. The story concludes with Dorothy reuniting with her family, having learned that the greatest magic lies not in spells or wizards, but in friendship, kindness, and self-discovery.
