In Guy Boothby's *A Bid for Fortune*, the narrative begins with Dick Hatteras, a wealthy young man, deciding to take a holiday in Sydney. His plans are abruptly shattered when he is kidnapped by the enigmatic Dr. Nikola and his associates, including the fraudulent Marquis of Beckenham. Imprisoned in a remote location with his companion, the young Marquis, Hatteras faces a desperate struggle for survival. The duo devises an ingenious escape plan involving a mouse carrying a message through a pipe to a local beggar. This contact provides them with a file to break their chains. Once freed, they travel to a nearby island where they discover the Colonial Secretary of New South Wales, Mr. Wetherell, held captive in a cave along with his daughter, Phyllis. After a tense confrontation, the group rescues the official and his daughter. Dr. Nikola, revealed to be a formidable figure with global connections, attempts to flee with a stolen artifact—a small Chinese stick—before being thwarted. The narrative follows the group's return to Sydney, where Hatteras and Phyllis marry. The novel concludes with the narrator reflecting on the mysterious fate of Dr. Nikola and his associates, leaving their ultimate plans unknown but hinting at future, larger schemes involving the stolen artifact. The story is characterized by its adventurous tone, blending elements of mystery and romance, and explores themes of resilience, the danger of unchecked ambition, and the unexpected twists of fate. The author, Guy Boothby, crafts a tale that captivates readers with its intricate plot and vivid characters, leaving them eager to know the ultimate destiny of the enigmatic Dr. Nikola.
