Summary up to 500 words
In Edgar Rice Burroughs' *Back to the Stone Age*, Lieutenant Wilhelm von Horst finds himself separated from his companions, Jason Gridley and the Waziri warriors, after a stampede of prehistoric beasts in the inner world of Pellucidar. Stranded in a timeless realm where the sun hangs motionless at the zenith, von Horst endures starvation and thirst while hunted by monstrous creatures, including a giant winged kangaroo. After a long sleep, he reunites with the Waziri, only to realize they are lost. His journey leads him to the cliff-dwelling village of Lo-har, where he discovers the girl La-ja captured by the savage giant, Gaz. Despite initial hostility from the tribe, von Horst rescues La-ja and confronts Gaz in a fierce duel. Using superior technique and a stone knife, von Horst kills the brute, earning the respect of the tribe and replacing the cowardly chief Brun. La-ja reveals her love for him, explaining her earlier attempts to flee were driven by a desire to protect him from Gaz. The tribe accepts von Horst as their new chief and his mate. News arrives of a new group of strangers arriving from the south with advanced weapons. Von Horst leads a contingent of warriors to meet them, discovering they are David Innes and his expedition from the outer crust, sent to find him. They are reunited with Thorek, Lotai, and Mumal, who escaped the land of the mammoth-men, as well as Brun, who is moved upon seeing La-ja. The two groups camp together in friendship. Von Horst reflects on his new life among the cave people, noting that he may never wish to return to the outer crust.
