Set against the backdrop of the American Civil War, Jules Verne's *From the Earth to the Moon* chronicles the rise of the Gun Club, a Baltimore-based society of artillery enthusiasts obsessed with advancing ballistics. Led by the visionary President Barbicane, the club resolves to construct the Columbiad, a massive cannon on Florida's Stony Hill, to fire a projectile carrying three passengers—Michel Ardan, Nicholl, and Barbicane himself—to the Moon. Following the war's end, the club's members, driven by a desire to find a new purpose for their engineering skills, embark on a monumental construction project. They dig a 900-foot-deep well and erect a massive brick revetment, transporting millions of pounds of cast iron by sea to melt in a vast array of furnaces. Despite accidents and the loss of several workmen, the team completes the cannon by June. On December 1st, the projectile is loaded, and the crew seals themselves inside. At the moment of firing, the Columbiad launches with a force that shakes the Earth, creating a massive atmospheric disturbance that temporarily obscures the view of the Moon. While the public anxiously waits, clouds block telescopic observation for days. Eventually, astronomers at Long's Peak in the Rocky Mountains detect the projectile. However, it has not reached the Moon's surface; instead, lunar gravity has captured it into an elliptical orbit, turning the projectile into a new artificial satellite. The story concludes with the three travelers safely orbiting the Moon, having survived the journey but not yet landing. Their fate remains uncertain as they await further developments in their lunar orbit, marking a significant, albeit incomplete, triumph for human ingenuity and exploration.
